YAHOO MAIL TIPS
January, 2013
- Use your Contacts list to add a recipient when starting a new email. Simply click on the “+” to the right of the “TO” box. Your Contact list will open in a new window. Scroll to find the right person, then click in the box to the left of their name. Click “Done” at the bottom of the window and the email address will be added to your new email.
- Add someone to your Contacts: Open an email from a new friend, then click on the “+” tab to the right of their name on the “FROM” line. This will open an “Add to Contacts” window with most of the information already completed. You can also just press “CTRL” and the letter “a” at the same time to open the same window. Check and add any information, then click “Save”.
- Want to put a standard signature on all your outgoing emails? On the top right, click on “Options” or the Gear Icon. On the next screen, click on “Signature” in the left-hand column. The next screen will allow you to add text – your name, a quote, an address, even a link – and customize it with color, size, font style. Simply choose to “Show a signature..” then fill in the box. All your outgoing emails will include this information at the bottom.
- Avoid confusion, use spell-check before sending your email. Just click on the small “abc” on the menu bar in a new email. Any questionable spelling will be underlined. Right click the word for spelling suggestions. You may click on a suggested spelling to make the change, or just ignore it by right-clicking back in the body of the email.
- To quickly empty your entire Spam folder, hover your mouse over the folder name, then left click on the trash can icon to the right of the folder name. Click “OK” on the pop-up confirmation screen and all mail in the Spam folder will be deleted.
- Organize your Inbox by adding new folders to hold important emails. In the left hand column, click on the “+” sign to the right of “Folders”. Fill in the folder name, then click “OK”. The new folder will appear in the left hand column.
- To move emails to a folder, put a check mark in the email that you wish to move. Then click on the button “Move” in the menu bar above the email list. A drop-down box will open with a list of all your folders. Click on a folder name and the checked email will be moved to that folder. You will still have the email but your Inbox will be cleaner and neater.
- If you are good with your mouse, you can also just drag an email from the Inbox to the appropriate folder in the left hand column.
- Want to block an address from your incoming mail? On the top right, click on “Options” or the Gear Icon. On the next screen, click on “Spam” or “Blocked Addresses” in the left-hand column. Type the address in “Blocked Email Addresses” and click “Add”. Email from a block address is automatically deleted before it gets to you. The sender is not notified that the message wasn’t delivered.
- Want to have all emails from one address sent directly to a special folder? On the top right, click on “Options” or the Gear Icon. On the next screen, click on “Filters”. In the form on the next screen, name your filter (suggest you use the name of the sender) and fill in the email address of the sender in the “Sender” box. In the drop down box at the bottom of the form, choose a folder or choose “New Folder” and create a special folder. Click on “Save” at the top of the form. All incoming emails from this address will now go directly to the folder that you specified.
