June 2012 - Beginner's Guide to Free Email Accounts

Why Do I Need a Second Email ?
The fastest growing and largest business is the U.S. is advertising. Years ago when you wanted to inform people about your product or service, you put an ad in a magazine or newspaper. In the late 60's TV took over as way to contact the world. It is costly to create a polished film for TV and to buy broadcast time. TV commercials soon became “potty break” time and your ad money was wasted. Bulk mailings using the post office had high printing and shipping costs.  Much of the material was tossed out without being opened.

With the Internet came Email - a way to reach millions of people with the push of a button and put your information in front of them.  Email, our new way of communicating, is now clogged with ads making it hard to find the our real messages. Every time you sign in on a web site your Email address is collected and possibly sold. This address is used to send advertising Emails or, as they are now known, “SPAM”. Internet Service Providers were also affected and tried to limit the amount of spam by putting up spam blockers.  But that often blocked messages you really wanted, putting the message in the trash folder. They had no really effective way of blocking this deluge of spam.

We recommend getting a Second Email Address:
This new address is like having a Work address and a Home address. We all get professional mail at a work address and personal mail at home. You should also consider opening a free account for performing potentially spam-inducing activities such as posting to bulletin boards, or unmoderated mailing lists, spending time in chat rooms, or using an online service that displays your address.  A second or even third email address is simple and free.

Many web servers offer free email addresses.   They include:

Yahoo:   www.yahoo.com
Google Mail:  www.gmail.com
Hotmail (AKA Windows Live):  www.hotmail.com
AOL:  www.aol.com

Starting a new email account is easy.  Simply choose one of these sites, click on the "Mail" or "Sign In" button and find the link to create a new account.  Each site will have clear and detailed steps to have your new email address up and running in a short time.
